About Our Programs

Island Health has a variety of programs in communities across Vancouver Island, BC.

Complex Care Housing

Complex Care Housing is a new service in Island Health’s two larger cities – Victoria and Nanaimo. The service helps to address the needs of people who have overlapping mental health and substance use issues, trauma or acquired brain injuries and often experience homelessness or are at risk of eviction. This program provides an enhanced level of health and social supports that serve people where they live, for as long as they need it.

Our Complex Care Housing initiative is currently recruiting Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, and Licensed Practical Nurses.    Learn More

Adult & Child, Youth & Family Acute Care

Acute services offer 24 hour a day, 7 day a week care to persons that require assessment, treatment and stabilization in an acute care setting. The goal of acute services is to support stabilization and recovery of patients in a coordinated fashion to support transitions back to care in the community.

Adult & Child, Youth & Family Crisis Services

Crisis Services offers emergency services aimed at the assessment and rapid stabilization of acute symptoms of mental illness and/or emotional distress. The goal of Crisis Services is to provide an immediate-as-possible response to people seeking help or referred to help during a crisis.

Adult & Child, Youth & Family Tertiary Care

Specialized care for individuals requiring intensive treatment, consultation and psychosocial rehabilitation due to a complex and refractory mental health disorder. In Island Health MHSU services, tertiary level care is provided by Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams, Psychiatric Intensive Care (PIC) Units, and in Adult Community Facilities and Seniors Acute and Community Facilities.

Adult Community Counselling

Teams may be comprised of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, clinical counsellors, and nurses with therapy experience to provide evidence-informed treatment to individuals who are experiencing acute and complex mental health and substance use challenges.

Adult Detox

Withdrawal management (detox) services provide a range of medical and support services in safe and supportive environments that allow for the physical withdrawal from specific drugs including alcohol. Withdrawal management may be achieved through inpatient services, day programs or in-home services.
